and enjoying my lunch of zongzi (glutinous rice dumplings) at the office when my colleague alerted me of an article in a chinese daily.
A chinese doctor had warned of toxic contents due to the raffia strings used to tie up the rice dumplings. After 3-hour of boiling the zongzi in high heat, some toxic substances will be emanated from the raffia string into the water and naturally absorbed by the glutinous rice.
As the article was written in chinese, I can't translate the type of toxic substances.
The chinese doctor claimed that the toxins will trigger cancer....!!!!
Alert !!!! I think his statement should be taken seriously.
What is raffia string made of ?
In the olden days, people used a type of natural strings... something like the stem of leaves or grass ?
Modern day zongzi tied by raffia strings....
very delicious.... but is it safe ?
I think this is the type of natural strings used for olden days zongzi ...

ohh and I miss zongzi, wishing i were back home now. boiling raffia string's definitely disturbing, but u can hardly find ppl use 'natural' strings when selling zongzis nowadays, and preparing them urself is a bit of a hassle!
